Beauty is the category people assume they already understand: a pretty room, a product wall, a line out the door. Our archive says something more specific. We went through every pop-up tagged Beauty at our Manhattan storefronts — 31 activations between February 2024 and November 2026 — and looked at where they went, how long they stayed and when they opened.

The answers are close to the opposite of what we found for fashion. Beauty books bigger rooms, for fewer days, and it opens in the middle of the week.

How we counted: every pop-up case study on our site carries a category tag, and we used those. 31 are tagged Beauty at the storefronts we operate today (30 have run; Dieux Skin is booked for 2–8 November 2026). Six older beauty activations at venues we no longer operate are left out. A few brands that sell beauty products sit under other tags, so treat 31 as a floor, not a ceiling.

1. Beauty uses the big rooms — half the time

Fashion crowds into our smallest Nolita storefronts: 83% of fashion pop-ups went into one of the five rooms under 900 square feet. Beauty splits almost evenly.

251 Elizabeth450 sq ft4
213 Bowery750 sq ft2
173 Elizabeth250 sq ft2
247 Elizabeth375 sq ft2
22 Wooster2,100 sq ft2

14 of the 31 — 45% — took one of our two 1,600 sq ft storefronts, 262 Mott in Nolita and 188 Lafayette in SoHo. Another 15 (48%) went into rooms under 900 square feet. Only two used 22 Wooster, our largest: TRESemmé’s one-day A-List Salon during New York Fashion Week, and Summer Fridays’ Sun Room on 13–14 March 2026.

The reason is probably the format rather than the product. A fashion pop-up is rails and a fitting area. A beauty pop-up is often a set, a consultation, a sampling bar, a photo moment, and a queue that needs somewhere to stand. Those take floor, so the 1,600 sq ft rooms get used for what they’re good at: launches and activations where the room itself is part of the idea.

2. The median beauty pop-up runs four days

Four days — two fewer than fashion’s six. And the distribution is front-loaded:

Run lengthBeauty pop-upsShare
1–3 days1239%
4–7 days1239%
8–14 days516%
15–30 days13%
31+ days13%

24 of 31 ran a week or less, and 12 ran three days or fewer. The one-day end includes TRESemmé (Saturday 14 February 2026 at 22 Wooster) and Kat Burki (27 June 2024 at 188 Lafayette). The two-day set includes Ole Henriksen’s Scandiland at 262 Mott on 9–10 October 2026 — a lip-treatment launch that offered the first chance to buy the product, before its Sephora app preview on 15 October and full retail launch on 16 October.

That is the pattern in the data: the shortest beauty pop-ups are timed to something — a product drop, a fashion week, a retail launch — and are built to be finished before the news cycle moves on.

The long end is the exception. The House of De:maf ran 18 days at 21 Spring (3–20 June 2026), and K-LAB 365 held 213 Bowery for 31 days (14 May–13 June 2026). De:maf is also our one repeat in the category: it ran 11 days in the same room in October 2025, then came back for longer.

One practical note, because short runs and our booking unit don’t line up exactly. Our standard rental cycle is a minimum of one week, running Tuesday 10am to Monday noon, with occasional exceptions depending on the project. If your plan is a one- to three-day event, say so at inquiry rather than assuming either way.

3. October is the peak, and January and August are empty

Beauty openings by month, across the 31:

MonthBeauty pop-ups opened
October5
March, May, June4 each
July, September3 each
February, April, November, December2 each
January, August0

October’s five are EWG Verified Clean Beauty (18–19 October 2024), De:maf (1–11 October 2025), VT Cosmetics (24–31 October 2025), CO2Lift (29 October–1 November 2025) and Ole Henriksen this month. The cluster sits just ahead of the holiday season.

Fashion peaks in September and April, so the two categories compete less than you might expect. If you want a quieter room and a calmer calendar, the zero-booking months are the opportunity — though note the trade-off: nobody in our archive has tested January or August, so you would be the first to find out whether foot traffic holds.

4. Beauty opens in the middle of the week

16 of the 31 opened on a Wednesday or Thursday (9 and 7). Friday and Monday had 7 and 6, Tuesday one and Saturday one. Only TRESemmé opened on a Saturday, and that was a fashion-week one-day event. One reading is that brands want press and creators in the room before the weekend crowd, though the archive records dates, not intent.

What this means for planning

Two things to line up early. If you plan to serve drinks or food, read our guide to NYC pop-up permits — the alcohol permit alone needs 20+ days. And work back from opening day using the production timeline: a standard build takes three to four weeks, so a launch date in October is a September decision.

For ideas on how beauty brands turn a room into a format, see pop-up ideas by industry and five photo moments from real NYC activations. Weekly rents vary by space and season; live ranges are shown on every space page, and the neighbourhood comparison is in what a pop-up costs by NYC neighbourhood.

Where we come in

We produce more than 150 pop-ups a year across our Manhattan storefronts, so we know what the launch week of a beauty brand needs: the right room, the build, the permits and the crew. Tell us your launch date, your headcount and whether you’re sampling, and we’ll point you to the space that fits. Production consultations are free — see our production services or start an inquiry below.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a beauty pop-up usually run in NYC?

The median across the 31 beauty pop-ups at our Manhattan storefronts is four days. 24 of 31 ran a week or less, and 12 ran three days or fewer. Only two ran longer than two weeks: 18 days and 31 days.

What size space does a beauty pop-up need?

It varies more than for fashion. 14 of 31 beauty pop-ups used our two 1,600 sq ft storefronts (262 Mott and 188 Lafayette), and 15 used rooms under 900 sq ft. Launch moments with queues, sets or sampling tend to take the larger rooms; consultation or product-focused weeks fit the smaller ones.

When is the best time of year to open a beauty pop-up in NYC?

October is the busiest month in our archive, with five openings. March, May and June follow with four each. No beauty pop-up at our current storefronts has opened in January or August, which makes them quiet months if you want a calmer calendar.

Which day of the week should a beauty pop-up open?

Wednesday and Thursday account for 16 of the 31 openings. Our standard rental cycle runs Tuesday 10am to Monday noon, with a one-week minimum and occasional exceptions, so mention a short event at inquiry.

Do I need a permit for a beauty pop-up in NYC?

Often not. A retail-only pop-up with fewer than 75 people inside at once generally needs no extra city permit. Serving alcohol, hosting 75 or more at once, putting graphics on a landmarked exterior, or preparing food each add one. See our permits guide for lead times.
