The Future of Pop-Ups: 2025’s Hottest Trends

Let's talk about something really cool: POP UPS IN 2025.

You're probably thinking, "Aren't pop ups just temporary shops?" Oh, not anymore! Pop Ups are evolving into full-blown experiences that'll make you forget reality for a hot minute. From dreamy setups to mixed-reality shopping, 2025 is set to be the year pop ups get bigger, bolder, and way more exciting. Whether you're a brand looking to make waves or a consumer chasing the next big thing, you're gonna want to keep up with these pop up trends.

Let's dive in!

1. Surrealist and Dreamlike Set Designs

Inspired by the rise of fantasy-driven aesthetics in fashion and film, pop up design is embracing surrealism. This aligns with a larger cultural shift toward escapism in art and branding and aims to give us a (much-needed) break from digital saturation.

A perfect example is The Maison&Objet 2025: Sur/Reality pop-up; a mind-bending design fair held in Paris on January 16-20 2025, featuring melting furniture, mirrored labyrinths, and art that seemed to come alive.

Picture this: a space filled with floating staircases, gravity-defying installations, and optical illusions that make you feel like you'd stepped into a dream. Designers and interior architects blended historical and artistic references to reintroduce wonder and challenge the status quo.

In Halls 3/4 of the exhibit, the "What's New? In Retail" reimagined the future of retail, brining a sequence of fun costumer experiences within a single, vibrant area imagined by François Delclaux.

2. Multi-Sensory and ASMR-Inspired Activations

Tactile and auditory elements are becoming just as important as visual design. Textured elements and soft ambient sounds are being integrated into pop ups to create fully immersive sensory environments. Brands are leveraging ASMR-inspired design to enhance emotional connections, making consumers feel deeply engaged rather than just passive observers.

Let's take a look at The Reece Cooper Pop up at our very own 2 Rivington St location in NoLita. Beautifully conceptualized and executed, the space was transformed into an experience that brought us back to childhood and made consumers experience retail in a new way.

3. Mixed-Reality Shopping Experiences

Blurring the line between digital and physical, brands are incorporating mixed reality into their pop-ups by collaborating with well-known artists in the VR / MR space. This technology-driven approach allows brands to showcase expansive collections in minimal physical space while keeping visitors engaged.

Prada Mode 2025 in Abu Dhabi's was a next-level blend of art, music, and dining, curated by multidisciplinary artist, Theaster Gates. If you're not familiar with Prada Mode, it is Prada's exclusive, traveling social club concept that blends fashion, art, music, and dining into one immersive experience.

The pop up featured two distinct vibes: inside a cylindrical structure, guests enjoyed acoustic music and meditative moments, while outside, DJ sets and live performances by NTS brought the energy of a buzzing club.

While the event wasn't solely focused on showcasing Prada's clothing or accessories, it was very much a part of the brand's strategy to connect with luxury consumers, reinforcing its position as a lifestyle brand that goes beyond fashion.

4. Theatrical and Performance-Driven Events

In 2025, static displays are being replaced by live, theatrical activations! Brands are hiring performers, dancers, and immersive theater actors to create real-time narratives that unfold throughout the event.

Familiar with the show Severance? The super creepy, mind-bending one about work-life balance gone wrong? Well, they did a pop up in Grand Central, and it was spectacular. The pop up recreated the ambiance of Lumon Industries-the weird office spaces and the creepy break rooms. You could watch the actors from outside a glass box, embodying their characters in real time. For fans of Severance, it was a chance to step directly into the story, blurring the line between fiction and reality in a way that was both thrilling and thought-provoking.

5. INTERACTIVE GAMES

Another pop up trend on the rise is the incorporation of interactive games and exclusive contests that build a stronger connection with the community.

Just in time for National Milk Day (January 11th), Silk hosted a live taste test in New York City! Anyone could visit for a chance to taste cereal with both Silk and dairy milk while hooked up to a lie detector test, facilitated by famed polygraph examiner John Grogan, to help Silk determine who's telling the truth and who's a "Cereal" Liar. Anyone who says they prefer dairy milk and isn't caught in a "cereal lie" by the polygraph walked away with $50!

6. Traveling Concept Stores

Imagine stepping into a cozy little pop up in NYC and suddenly feeling like you're being transported to a dreamy mountain getaway…that's exactly what Pinterest and Marriott Bonvoy pulled off with their Peak Travel Concierge pop up!

For two days, they transformed the space into a travel paradise, inspired by Pinterest's 2025 trend predictions. Visitors got personalized travel recommendations, custom mountain-themed gifts, and even a chance to win an epic vacation to a Marriott Bonvoy mountain resort. It was the perfect mix of digital inspiration and real-world adventure, showing just how fun and immersive travel-themed pop ups can be.

7. Modular and Sustainable Buildouts

Last but definitely not least, sustainability! Brands are going green and modular setups are designed to be reused across multiple locations, proving that eco-friendly can still be eye-catching.

Take the HAVEN/ASICS Pop-Up at 213 Bowery, for example. They hosted an exclusive pre-release of their collection, complete with live music and drinks, but the real showstopper was the production design. Cinder blocks were arranged in a bold, minimalist display to showcase the collection. It was sleek, it was stylish, and it was so New York.

One thing is for certain: In 2025, pop ups are no longer just about being seen… they're about being remembered. These trends are proof that pop ups are the future of retail (and entertainment!).

The question is: Are you ready to pop up?!
